Journey along the south coast into the Empty Quarter’s endless dunes and Nizwa’s bustling markets.

Explore the south of Oman on a photography journey through rugged coastlines, traditional markets, historic forts and the vast silence of the Empty Quarter. Less travelled than the north, the region offers a slower, more raw atmosphere where camels roam freely and life goes on in a way that feels deeply authentic. Guided by Jord, you’ll photograph carefully selected locations while refining your creative vision, editing approach and understanding of travel photography in a more immersive and meaningful way.
The Itinerary
Day 1: Muscat
We start the workshop early with a visit to the Muttrah Fish Market, where we'll photograph fishermen bringing in their morning catch as the city begins to wake.
Afterwards, we'll spend some time exploring the nearby Muttrah Corniche, focusing on street scenes, and traditional architecture.
In the afternoon, we fly from Muscat to Salalah, where our journey through southern Oman begins.
We'll gather for a welcome dinner and discuss the plan for the days ahead.
Day 2: Salalah
We leave Salalah before sunrise and head east along the coastline, stopping at Al Haffa Beach to photograph the soft morning light as fishermen prepare their boats.
Continuing east, we visit Wadi Darbat, focusing on reflections, camels, winding roads, and the lush scenery that makes this area unique within Oman.
Throughout the day, we’ll stop for roadside scenes, mountain viewpoints, and quieter moments of traditional Omani life.
In the afternoon, we explore the textured streets of Mirbat Old Town before finishing the day at Jabal Samhan, photographing its dramatic cliffs and layered mountain landscapes at sunset.
Day 3: Salalah
We leave before sunrise and head to Mughsail Beach to photograph the rugged coastline and soft morning light.
From there, we continue to Fazayah Beach, where turquoise water, white sand, and dramatic cliffs offer excellent opportunities for drone photography.
Along the way, we'll stop at remote coastal locations and fishing villages before making our way to Jebel Shaat.
We finish the day photographing the dramatic cliffs and sweeping coastal views of Jebel Shaat before returning to Salalah for dinner.
Day 4: Empty Quarter
We enjoy a relaxed morning in Salalah, with time for breakfast, an editing session, and a review of images from the first half of the workshop.
After lunch, we leave the coast behind and venture deep into the Empty Quarter, the world's largest continuous sand desert, where we'll spend the next two nights camping amongst the dunes.
As the sun begins to set, we'll explore the desert landscape, working with the patterns, scale, and textures of the dunes.
We photograph a local camel herdsman moving through the dunes before returning to camp for dinner and a night under the stars.
Day 5: Empty Quarter
We spend the day exploring the vast landscapes of the Empty Quarter, using our 4x4 vehicles to reach different dunes, viewpoints, and compositions throughout the desert.
Along the way, we'll visit local camel camps and gain an insight into the traditional Bedouin way of life, learning how communities continue to live and work in this remote environment.
During the harsher midday light, we'll return to camp for lunch, an editing session, and some time to relax.
In the late afternoon, we head back into the dunes to photograph the changing light and sweeping desert landscapes before returning to camp for another evening beneath the stars.
Day 6: Nizwa
After breakfast, we leave the Empty Quarter behind and begin the drive north towards Nizwa, travelling through some of Oman's vast and varied landscapes.
We arrive in Nizwa in the late afternoon and settle into our hotel before heading out for dinner in Nizwa Old Town.
In the evening, there will be time to wander the alleyways surrounding the fort and souq, soak up the atmosphere of the old town, and enjoy a relaxed end to the day.
Day 7: Sinaw
We leave before sunrise for the famous Sinaw Camel Market, where traders gather from across the region to buy, sell, and care for their animals. This is one of the most authentic market experiences in Oman and offers endless opportunities for documentary-style photography.
After the market, we'll explore Sinaw Souq, as locals trade livestock, textiles, produce, and household goods.
We return to Nizwa for a dedicated editing session, reviewing images from the workshop and discussing editing techniques, storytelling, and image selection.
The evening is free to relax, swim, or continue editing.
Day 8: Nizwa > Bald Sayt
We start before sunrise at Nizwa Market, which will be especially vibrant as it falls on the final Friday before Ramadan. This is one of the best times of year to photograph the market, with locals gathering from across the region to prepare for the month ahead.
In the afternoon, we visit Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its impressive mud-brick architecture and views over the surrounding oasis.
From Bahla, we continue into the Hajar Mountains, arriving in the remote village of Bald Sayt for our final night together.
Day 9: Bald Sayt > Muscat
We begin the day with a sunrise shoot from a viewpoint overlooking Bald Sayt, one of Oman's most picturesque mountain villages, as the first light illuminates the terraces, palm groves, and surrounding peaks.
After breakfast, we'll wander through the village itself, exploring its narrow pathways and traditional mud-brick homes.
We then begin our journey back towards Muscat, stopping at Nakhal Fort along the way for one final photography session.
The workshop concludes upon arrival in Muscat. Participants are free to catch an evening flight home or continue exploring Oman independently.

The small group size means I can work closely with everyone - whether you’re just starting out, looking to refine your craft, or already shooting professionally. It’s a chance to learn, create, and grow in a supportive environment while photographing one of the most extraordinary countries on earth.

You’ll need to fly into Muscat International Airport (MCT), where the workshop begins. Your hotel on the night of Jan 28th is included in the workshop price. Once the trip starts, all transport, accommodation, and logistics are taken care of from start to finish.
The workshop also ends in Muscat, making travel plans simple. -
Yes - comprehensive travel insurance is required for all participants. It should include medical coverage and trip cancellation, just in case of unexpected events.

January/February is one of the best months to photograph Oman, with clear skies, mild temperatures, and soft light. Expect comfortable days around 22–28°C, cooler mornings and evenings, and ideal conditions for both desert and coastal shooting.

Absolutely. Many guests join solo. You’ll share a twin room with another participant unless you’d prefer a single room (available for an additional supplement).

This trip is limited to 8 participants, keeping the group small and personal so everyone gets plenty of shooting time and guidance.

Yes - drone permits are available for this workshop via the Serb app. Please note that flying is only allowed in approved areas, and we’ll guide you through when and where you can safely use it.

I’m a full-time travel and street photographer from the UK and have spent the last nine years exploring Asia and the Middle East with my camera.
Oman has quickly become one of my favorite places to photograph. From my first visit, I was struck by the contrast between its dramatic desert landscapes, rugged mountains, and lively coastal towns. Every trip reveals something new - whether it’s locals gathering at a bustling souq, fishermen hauling in their morning catch, or the timeless stillness of the dunes at sunrise.
